The day draws on with golden light, glad songs go echoing through the height, the broad earth lifts an answering cheer, the deep makes moan with wailing fear. For lo, He comes, the mighty King, to take from death his power and sting, to trample down his gloomy reign, and break the weary prisoner’s chain. Maker of all, to thee we pray, fulfil in us thy joy today. When death assails, grant, Lord, that we may share thy Paschal victory. Amen.

There’s a Wideness in God’s Mercy – Maurice Bevan
There’s a wideness in God’s mercy like the wideness of the sea; there’s a kindness in his justice which is more than liberty. There is no place where earth’s sorrows are more felt than up in heaven; there is no place where earth’s failings have such kindly judgment given. For the love of God is broader than the measure of man’s mind; and the heart of the Eternal is most wonderfully kind. But we make his love too narrow by false limits of our own; and we magnify his strictness with a zeal he will not own. There is plentiful redemption in the blood that has been shed; there is joy for all the members in the sorrow of the Head. There is grace enough for thousands of new worlds as great as this; there is room for fresh creations in that upper home of bliss. If our love were but more simple we should take him at his word; and our lives would be all gladness in the joy of Christ our Lord.

Nolo mortem peccatoris – Thomas Morley
Nolo mortem peccatoris; haec sunt verba Salvatoris [I do not wish the death of a sinner; these are the words of the Savior]. Father, I am thine only Son, sent down from heav’n mankind to save. Father, all things fulfill’d and done according to thy will, I have. Father, my will now all is this: Nolo mortem peccatoris. Father, behold my painful smart, taken for man on ev’ry side; ev’n from my birth to death most tart, no kind of pain I have denied, but suffer’d all, and all for this: Nolo mortem peccatoris.

Lord, let me know mine end, and the number of my days, that I may be certified how long I have to live. Behold, thou hast made my days as it were a span long, and mine age is even as nothing in respect of thee; and verily every man living is altogether vanity. For man walketh in a vain shadow, and disquieteth himself in vain; he heapeth up riches, and cannot tell who shall gather them. And now, Lord, what is my hope? Truly my hope is even in thee. Hear my prayer, O Lord, and with thine ears, consider my calling. Hold not thy peace at my tears. O spare me a little, that I may recover my strength before I go hence, and be no more seen.

Hymn: 234
Voluntary
Revelation 22, adapted by Ruth Manz
Peace be to you and grace from him
Who freed us from our sins,
Who loved us all and shed his blood
That we might saved be.
Sing holy, holy to our Lord,
The Lord, Almighty God,
Who was and is and is to come;
Sing holy, holy, Lord!
Rejoice in heaven, all ye that dwell therein,
Rejoice on earth, ye saints below,
For Christ is coming, is coming soon,
For Christ is coming soon!
E’en so, Lord Jesus, quickly come,
And night shall be no more;
They need no light nor lamp nor sun,
For Christ will be their All!
The writing of this anthem came at a time of great stress in the Manz household. John Manz, the three-year-old son of Paul and Ruth Manz, developed a rare type of double pneumonia. The illness produced a very high fever, which required hospitalization and painful treatments to lower his temperature. It became important for Paul and Ruth to give twenty-four-hour attention as John’s condition became critical. During this time Paul composed a motif and Ruth wrote a text based on the last chapter of Revelation as a way of expressing their hope and grief. John recovered and later became a Pastor in the Lutheran Church. The original dedication of the piece read, “For those who prayed for John,” but the dedication was later shortened to read, “To John.”

Never weather-beaten sail more willing bent to shore, never tired pilgm’s limbs affected slumber more,
than my wearied sprite now longs to fly out of my troubled breast: O come quickly, sweetest Lord, and
take my soul to rest. Ever blooming are the joys of Heaven’s high Paradise, cold age deafs not there our

Love bade me welcome; yet my soul drew back, Guilty of dust and sin. But quick-eyed Love, observing me grow slack From my first entrance in, Drew nearer to me, sweetly quesToning, If I lacked anything. “A guest,” I answered, “worthy to be here.” Love said, “You shall be he.” “I, th’unkind, ungrateful? Ah, my dear, I cannot look on thee.” Love took my hand, and smiling did reply, “Who made the eyes but I?” “Truth, Lord, but I have marred them; let my shame Go where it doth deserve.” “And know you not,” says Love, “who bore the blame?” “My dear, then I will serve.” “You must sit down,” says Love, “and taste my meat.” So I did sit and eat.

The Beatitudes –†Arvo Pärt (b. 1935)
Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted. Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God. Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness's sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you. Amen.

25 Oct: Sun of my Soul – Todd Wilson (b. 1954) John Keble (1792-‐1866)
Sun of my soul, thou Savior dear, it is not night if thou be near; O mano earth-‐born cloud arise to hide theefrom thy servant’s eyes. When the sok dews of kindly sleep my weary eyelids gently steep, be my last thought, how sweet to rest forever on my Savior’s breast.
Sun of my soul, abide with me from morn till eve, for without thee I cannot live; abide with me when night is nigh, for without thee I dare not die. If some poor wand’ring child of thine has spurned today the voice divine, now Lord the gracious work begin; let him no more lie down in sin.
Sun of my soul, watch by the sick; enrich the poor with blessings from thy boundless store; be ev’ry mourner’s sleep tonight, like infants’ slumbers pure and light. Come near and bless us when we wake, through the world our way we take, till in the ocean of thy love, we lose ourselves in heav’n above. Amen.

All Things Bright and Beautiful arr. Michael McCabe (b. 1941) Cecil Frances Alexander (1818-1895)
All things bright and beautiful, All creatures great and small, All things wise and wonderful, The Lord God made them all. Each little ower that opens, Each little bird that sings, He made their glowing colours, He made their tiny wings. The purple-headed mountain, The river running by, The sunset and the morning, That brightens up the sky. The cold wind in the winter, The pleasant summer sun, The ripe fruits in the garden, He made them every one: He gave us eyes to see them, And lips that we might tell, How great is God Almighty, Who has made all things well.
