The Work of the People

It takes about 200 people to lead our Cathedral’s Sunday morning worship, from choir members to clergy, ushers and acolytes, and everyone else who pitches once or twice (or four times) a month. That may seem like an inflated number, until we sit down and write down all the roles that folks can play to help make our weekly worship welcoming, transcendent, and soul-nourishing.

To me, that’s a great opportunity, because for so many reasons it grows our capacity to be a sacred place for all people.

Here’s just a few reasons:

  • We will grow.
  • Many of us thrive by having a specific role to play
  • We cultivate a balance of experience and new energy
  • Actively growing participation creates more opportunities to change from roles we’re tired of to new things
  • More people mean more diversity, and new ideas
  • A more dynamic Sunday congregation will make all our ministries, from formation to advocacy, more lively
  • The cathedral church thrives as more leaders are raised up
  • Involvement in worship deepens our engagement with the liturgy itself
  • We are truly being the people of God when we all lead worship together!
  • We will grow. (Did I mention that one already?)
  • In the month of January we’ll be actively creating Cathedral Sunday Teams to give more people the chance to take a leadership role on Sunday Morning. I encourage you to consider if there is a role you can plan one Sunday a month that will allow Trinity to grow and thrive on Sundays and beyond.

Tomorrow, we’ll share a template for our Cathedral Sunday Teams when we send the monthly Cathedral Connections newsletter. You’ll see that we had some fun with what we created! And now it’s time, in the month of January, to let us know which team you can serve on from mid-February to the end of May.

    Let’s get to work!
