A New Presiding Bishop

This summer the Episcopal Church will elect our next Presiding Bishop, who will lead us through the next nine years of ministry and transformation. This is a time of uncertainty for our church as we emerge from a global pandemic and many years of cultural change. Yet, is is also a time of incredible opportunity to thrive today and to shape our church for decades to come. How do we chart a way forward?

Like the selection of a bishop, dean, or rector, the election of a new leader gives us a chance to not only “pick one” but also to glean wisdom from a number of leaders offering their gifts in our mutual process. We have five diocesan Bishops who are running, each offering a distinct vision for where the Episcopal Church can go.

This Sunday we’ll spend some time with the five candidates at the Dean’s Forum. (We’re in Summer Schedule now so remember that the forum will be at 9:00 am). We’ll watch the short introductory videos that each has prepared, and then have a conversation about our hopes for the church in the years to come.

Dale Murphy and I are both alternate deputies to General Convention this summer. We will lead the forum and conversation together this Sunday at 9am in Conference Room A/B. I hope you’ll be with us, and we look forward to hearing your thoughts.

The Very Rev. Bernard J. Owens
