Featured Choral Evensong from Wednesday, April 20, 2016
Anselm, Archbishop Of Canterbury
This week’s Choral Evensong was sung by the Trinity Chamber Singers on April 20, 2016. We commemorated Anselm, Archbishop of Canterbury, and the homilist was the Rev. Gayle Catinella, rector (then and now) of St. John’s, Youngstown.
The choral music for this service came from the pen of American composers Gerre Hancock and David Conte. Dr. Hancock was Organist and Master of Choristers at St. Thomas Church Fifth Avenue in New York for 33 years. His setting of the Preces and Responses typifies his gift for lyricism and harmonic warmth. Lakewood native David Conte (b. 1955) is the composer of the canticles and anthem. David studied with Nadia Boulanger and Aaron Copland, and is the composer of over 150 published works. He has received commissions from Chanticleer, the San Francisco Symphony Chorus, the American Guild of Organists and many other organizations and performing groups. We were honored ask him to write a setting of the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis especially for us at Trinity Cathedral, and this has now joined his other published works. The anthem, “Valediction,” is David’s inspired setting of a poem on eternal love by the English poet-soldier Sir Philip Sydney (1554-1586), one of the notable figures of the Elizabethan age.
