Trinity Cathedral: The Episcopal Church in Downtown Cleveland

Worship Ministries

Acolytes
Youth and adults are trained to serve in this ministry that assists the clergy principally at the 11:15 a.m. service. They participate in the procession and assist at the altar. Acolytes are scheduled on a rotating basis.

Cathedral Choir
The Cathedral Choir produces music of professional quality for the 11:15 service, for Choral Evensong on Wednesday and Sunday, and for special events. Although most of its members are professionals, the choir is also open through audition to enthusiastic volunteers with good sight-reading skills who can commit themselves to its regular schedule of rehearsals and services.

Children and Youth Choir
The Children's Choir is open to children grades K-6 and the Youth Choir to young people grades 7-12. Both groups sing monthly at services.

Eucharistic Ministers
Members administer the Chalice at the service of Holy Eucharist. They are scheduled on a rotating basis. Each minister must be a confirmed member of the Cathedral, approved by the Dean and the vestry, and licensed by the Bishop. Attendance at a training session is required before beginning this ministry. Members may occasionally take Eucharist to people who are homebound. Periodic training is required.

Flower & Garden Guild
Guild members prepare the flowers and greens for use in the worship space each Sunday, and decorate the Cathedral for special occasions such as weddings and funerals. Members also oversee the care of all Cathedral green spaces including the garden and its furnishings.

Greeters
Greeters welcome people to church on Sundays, introducing themselves to people they do not know and assisting them as needed. Greeters are assigned in teams on a rotating basis and provide a ministry of hospitality.

Labyrinth
Many people come to walk and meditate in the labyrinth on Tuesday nights from 6:00 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. Volunteers are needed to set up the labyrinth and greet walkers. More about the Trinity's Labyrinth: Labyrinth page.

Lectors
On a rotating basis, members read the scripture lessons and the Prayers of the People at Sunday morning services, Evensong, and at special services. There is periodic training but no license from the Diocese is required.

Sacristans / Altar Guild
Members working with the Altar Guild, ensure that the Cathedral space is readied for worship. They order all sacristy supplies, bread and wine, and care for all altar linens and clergy vestments. All persons ages 12 and above are welcome to assist in the preparation of the altar and worship space for all services. Members receive on the job training and are scheduled on a rotating basis.

Ushers
Ushers arrive at least 30 minutes before worship services and welcome worshippers to the Cathedral. They distribute service leaflets at every entrance, help arrivals find seats, count attendance, and collect the offerings. At their invitation, two cathedral members present the bread and wine at the altar. Ushers also direct the flow of the congregation at communion.

Vergers Guild
The Verger acts as the Master of Ceremonies throughout the worship service by coordinating the activities of clergy, acolytes, and choir. It is the verger's responsibility to insure that all participants are in place, all vessels needed for the service are available and that the service begins on time. Vergers regularly consult with the clergy ito organize worship, and serve at the pleasure of the Dean. Training is required of all members.
